THE HANDBALL SUPER CUP 2024

The opening of the 2024/25 handball season will be a very special event. For the first time, the HBF and HBL will host the Women's and Men's Handball Super Cup as a combined event. The two duels between the German champions and cup winners for the first title of the season will be held on Saturday, August 31st 2024 in Düsseldorf's PSD BANK DOME.

2024 will not only see two top teams from the Women's Handball Bundesliga (HBF) and the Men's Handball Bundesliga (HBL) come together for the first time to open the new season. The top event also promises to be a handball festival for fans of the men's and women's Bundesliga, with two titles being decided under one roof. Men's and women's handball are thus moving even closer together in the decade of handball.

review: THW KIEL WINS THE HANDBALL SUPER CUP 2023 AFTER A NAIL-BITING THRILLER

THW Kiel is the winner of the Handball Super Cup 2023 for the fourth time in a row. In a high-class and exciting match, the defending champions beat the DHB Cup winners Rhein-Necker Löwen 37:36 (16:16) after penalty kicks. Kiel was able to build a three-goal lead right in the opening phase. However, Sebastian Hinze's team was able to equalize before halftime and the teams went into the dressing room with a 16:16 score. In the second half, the game was balanced for a long time, with slight advantages for the Lions. However, Juri Knorr misses ten seconds before the end on a seven-meter shot and Kiel's Niklas Ekberg is able to equalize with the final siren. In the seven-meter throw, THW goalkeeper Tomás Mrkva saves twice and secures the first title of the 23/24 season for THW Kiel.

history: THE SUPER CUP, A COMPLETE SUCCESS

From 2018 to 2024, the Super Cup will be held at the PSD BANK DOME (formerly ISS DOME) in Düsseldorf, which holds more than 10,000 spectators. The event premiere, which was held on August 22, 2018, was a great success thanks to the cooperation with the sports city of Düsseldorf.

The match between the German champion and the DHB-Pokal winner for the Super Cup has been an integral part of the LIQUI MOLY HBL's schedule since 1994. The competition's debut saw THW Kiel and SG Wallau-Massenheim face off. The Super Cup turned out to be a complete success, thrilling the public and bringing handball back to the center of attention at the start of the season. Although the surprise winner of the premiere was SG Wallau-Massenheim, the opponent from Kiel at the time is still the undisputed record winner. In 23 appearances, the Zebras have lifted the trophy 13 times.

The Super Cup will also take place in the PSD BANK DOME in the sports city of Düsseldorf in 2024.
